Records Set in the Day Sales

The auction record for Barkley L. Hendricks was smashed twice within one sale. Taking the top slot was The Way You Look Tonight (1981), which sold for $960,500 (est. $200,000-$300,000). Earlier in the auction, Innocence & Friend (1977) had made a record for the artist when it sold for $396,500 (est. $100,000-$150,000). A third work Yocks (1975) also sold for $942,500 (est. $300,000-$400,000). The artist, who recently passed away, will be featured in the next New Orleans Triennial (“Prospect.4: The Lotus in Spite of the Swamp”). Image courtesy Sotheby's
